You are recommended to bring:
1. Your own motorcycle protective clothes and crash helmet. Note that early mornings can be very cold and days very hot. It is not recommended to ride with short trousers and short sleeved shirts as severe sunburn can result.
2. Swimming costume and beach towel.
3. Good sunglasses wearable with your crash helmet.
4. On mini bus accompanied tours, a very small day bag for spare jersey, camera, swimming costume etc. and a larger suitcase with everything else which will be transported by bus.
5. On non mini bus accompanied tours, a gunny bag type container to contain everything that can not be put into the twin panniers.
Flights
Remember to book your return flight for the evening if you plan to leave on the same day that the Tour ends
Dress
Casual wear: although there are no official dress codes, the locals would not appreciate if you arrive for dinner in biking regalia. Therefore, we recommend that you bring some smart-casual clothing (ties are not needed). Jeans, chinos with a sweater or shirt will suffice
Clothing
We recommend lightweight clothing since it can get very warm in summer. A jersey or pullover should suffice for when it does start to get a little cooler. Also remember to bring a light raincoat of sorts to be prepared for all weather conditions.
Money
As ATM's are available even in very small towns we advise against bringing money in travelers cheques. Travelers cheques can only be cashed at certain banks and not over the weekends and take ages to be cashed.
Safety
All our tours traverse parts of South Africa which are currently rated as "safe" for tourists by the major travel agencies. However, as with anywhere in the world, caution should be taken when walking at night.
Health
On the Cape Town based tours, unless you are arriving from a yellow fever zone, no particular immunisations are required. If from a yellow fever zone, you must have a valid international yellow fever inoculation certificate. Immunisation against cholera and smallpox is not required.
Driving Licence
A valid driver's licence, provided the photograph is an integral part of the licence and provided it is printed in English, is accepted. If your licence does not comply with these requirements, you should obtain an International Driving Permit prior to your tour, for South Africa.
Petrol Filling Stations
The vast majority do NOT accept credit cards and cash is required. Compared with Europe, in country districts there can be great distances between stations (especially for motorcycles) and due regard to this should be taken when leaving towns.
Speed Limits
In built up areas 60 k.p.h. Particularly when approaching and leaving towns and villages. On rural roads 100 k.p.h. Radar speed traps are often used. On Freeways 120 k.p.h.
Alcohol
Driving under the influence of alcohol is a very serious offence.
Support Vehicle - Mini Bus
When booking on a tour accompanied by a mini bus, non motorcycling participants at no extra cost may ride in the mini bus (which also conveys luggage) and meet up with the rest of the party at the overnight stops.
We need a minimum of 6 motorcycles booked for a mini bus accompanied tour.
